International Women's Day 2010

No. 6547 - 14 Feb 2010 - 13:40

Gastown, Vancouver

Sister Elizabeth Kelliher (left) of the Franciscan Sisters of Atonement has spent most of her life as a champion and spear-header of social justice and housing programs, education, child care, and health care. She came to the Atonement Sister's residence on East Cordova Street over ten years ago and is perhaps the most visible and irresistible advocate in the downtown. Everyone of any real or imagined power in this city knows Sr. Elizabeth and perhaps fears her a little bit. She is indomitable because she preaches about the powerful equality of love and that makes her the strong woman I choose to honour today.

This year's Canadian themes are Strong Women, Strong Canada, Strong World: Equality as put forth by the Status of Women (Federal Government).
