Although it is an invasive, non-native species, the Himalayan blackberry is mostly tolerated in these parts for the pounds of free, tasty fruit it produces. My brother's wife and I share a passion for 1950's Fire King Ware in this particular green
and for delicious, free blackberries.
While visiting them on the Sunshine Coast
(and taking pictures of everything)
she suggested I experiment with the bowl of fruit in the sunlight.
Voila!

"Now sit right back and I'll tell you a tale ..."
oops wrong seafaring TV show.
This is Gibsons Landing, a charming seaside town on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia and former film location of that international icon of Canadian television, The Beachcombers. The cast and crew are long gone but Molly's Reach lives on as a real restaurant and the village is chock a block with artists, galleries, award-winning gardens,
friendly locals and good food.

Underwater
The Assiniboine River spills over its banks as it flows past
The Forks Market where it empties into the larger
Red River (in the background).
What was recently a location for outdoor winter sports and
weekend festivals is now submerged under its fast, murky waters.

Ellice Café
No. 6364 - 11 Mar 2011 - 16:32:30 * No. 6366 - 11 Mar 2011 - 16:40:25
After stepping out into a warmish winter day in Winnipeg
(three degrees centigrade - dressed for Spring)
and enjoying a couple of hours of hospitality and Wi-Fi at the Ellice Café, I was met at the exit by a ten degree drop in temperature and blizzard conditions.
The seven blocks back to my rooms wearing only a cotton jacket were not impossible until I remembered the house keys were still sitting in the pocket of my winter coat, on a hook by the door.
No one was at home and only after a couple of frantic calls, from my refuge at the 7-11 down the street, did I locate one of my young landlords who agreed to face the blowing snow and let me into their little West End house.
Greenhorn!

Where I was born 56 years ago is now a centre of medical research and the second largest hospital in Canada. The building on the far right, is a tower of the original Heather Pavilion at Vancouver General Hospital. It sits at the top of Fairview Slopes, in the middle of the Vancouver Hospital and Health Services Centre with its assorted pavilions, medical office towers, satellite divisions, rehab centres as well as its neighbour, the BC Cancer Agency, and far flung partner, the UBC Teaching Hospital.
A large workforce requires feeding and I have noted a preponderance of good and inexpensive restaurants along this part of the Broadway corridor although two of my favourites were recently closed because of fire damage. The south side of Broadway may be almost as old as the 104 year old Heather Pavilion itself which is less vulnerable to fire due to a recent renovation.
