Misspelt and Misdirected

No. 0670 - 16 May 2011 - 13:34:48

I checked the spelling of Wolseley, a neighbourhood in downtown Winnipeg, only to find the graffitist doesn't know where exactly he/she is asking this fatuous question.
No winners here I fear.

Happy Birthday Tee Hee

No. 8563 - 16 Apr 2011 - 08:40:12

An unanticipated snow fall inspires a walk through downtown in
search of images for my mother who celebrates her 85th year today.
She was born in rural Manitoba and never actually lived in Winnipeg
but retains fond memories of the place.

Gastown, Vancouver

While some people come to the Ovaltine Cafe for a white bread, american-slice grilled cheese sandwich with a side of hashed browns for $3.50 and others come to get a picture of the most photographed neon sign in town, I lurk in the alley and ponder the mystery of the painted phone number.

The restaurant's number is listed in my archive copy of the 1962 Vancouver Telephone Directory (B.C. TEL) as MU(tual) 5-7021 but the number painted on the wall lacks a numeral and uses the non-existent exchange MA(rine). What looks and sounds real is as fake as processed cheese. Yum!

Formerly Robson Square

No. 0810 - 18 Apr 2010 - 14:30:07

Gastown, Vancouver

Perhaps we will still refer to this public space as Robson Square but the signage on all corners says GE Plaza.

I was living in New York City in the 1980's when this same thing happened to Rockefeller Plaza after GE bought everything at the Center including NBC which resides in the complex's main building. Mostly everyone ignored the corporate name changes and refused to give GE any credit for the famous landmark in mid-town Manhattan. Our landmark, on the other hand, is discreet and human-sized and more easily overlooked. It was designed by Arthur Erickson as a public concourse leading into and away from the important public spaces of the Courthouse and the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Corporate sponsors come and go but civic landmarks, public spaces, and local awareness are precious commodities of a functioning, meaningful, and supportive urban environment. The current corporatization of British Columbia has been gaining momentum for at least a dozen years and shows no sign of letting up in spite of a recent high-profile resignation. Campbellization devours not only the resources and services of the public but also the good will. Possibly one's role, as a historian, is to remain vigilant of events riding so consistently below the radar of everyday city life as to be not generally noticed.

Bejewelled

No. 3561 - 12 Jul 2010 - 22:12:03

Here is a thin-slice of landscape from a random perspective: eight storeys over the last hill before sea-level, facing southwest, in the downtown of Metro Vancouver. This image signals the transformation of a three year practice, which is drawing to a close at the end of the year, as the bloG continues from fresh perspectives.

The building in the foreground is 100 years old in 2011. Although it is handsome from afar it is also neglected by the not-for-profiteers of the social housing society; exploited for its unfortunate location at the southeast corner of Gastown.

In the background, City Hall shines bright white on the left side of the skyline, while Library Square emits red beams of light on the right.

Little Sky House sits mid-ground, off the centre line adjacent to Yaletown's towers of lit windows.

The sky is a moving backdrop.

I watch for signs.
