Tough Guys

No. 6662 - 12 Jul 2008 - 06:41:05 * No. 9286 - 02 May 2011 - 09:02:08

One man's crime is another man's profit.

The tough guy on the left is probably a member of a drug cartel and is apparently free to do business as long as he stays within the boundaries of Vancouver's "downtowneastside". As well as selling drugs he will be involved in the abuse and drug addicting of very young girls who have landed in this hell zone often due to family abuse and lack of education. Many refer to these female persons as "prostitutes" or "hookers" but really they are sex slaves and no more than children with stuffed animals hanging off their bags. They do not actually work for money but for the drugs that anesthetize their misery. When they are arrested and thrown in jail their male clients go free while their cartel bosses wait for them on the street. They will be beaten when they return without drugs or cash and then this pattern will repeat. Reviled by everyone and unable to escape their penury, most will die young and desperate within a short period of time from the bad dates, dirty drugs and impossible living conditions on the street.

Meanwhile the tough guy on the right is focused on property crime. He will tell you we need more prisons - built by corporate interests for profit. He will ignore studies suggesting a comprehensive national daycare program would help raise up hungry and unsupervised children whose parents, many single, make up the working poor because he disapproves on moral grounds.
At least girls can look forward to careers with the drug trafficking, money-laundering, sex-enslaving cartels which also give boys opportunities in drug dealing and pimping.
Both the federal and civic police forces can be witnessed standing by and watching because in many cases as one cop told me, off the record,
"if our political bosses tell us to sit on our hands, we sit on our hands".

I lived over the intersection of Main and Hastings Streets for three and a half years and documented plenty of the above scenario. Eventually I was forced to walk away due to the stress and frustration of living amongst the most stricken citizens in our country. I am lucky - the young women in these pictures are not.

"Tough on Crime" is a bill of goods and yesterday a slim majority of Canadians bought into it at the polls. Today I am a Canadian who feels neither strong nor free.

Gastown, Vancouver

While some people come to the Ovaltine Cafe for a white bread, american-slice grilled cheese sandwich with a side of hashed browns for $3.50 and others come to get a picture of the most photographed neon sign in town, I lurk in the alley and ponder the mystery of the painted phone number.

The restaurant's number is listed in my archive copy of the 1962 Vancouver Telephone Directory (B.C. TEL) as MU(tual) 5-7021 but the number painted on the wall lacks a numeral and uses the non-existent exchange MA(rine). What looks and sounds real is as fake as processed cheese. Yum!

Bejewelled

No. 3561 - 12 Jul 2010 - 22:12:03

Here is a thin-slice of landscape from a random perspective: eight storeys over the last hill before sea-level, facing southwest, in the downtown of Metro Vancouver. This image signals the transformation of a three year practice, which is drawing to a close at the end of the year, as the bloG continues from fresh perspectives.

The building in the foreground is 100 years old in 2011. Although it is handsome from afar it is also neglected by the not-for-profiteers of the social housing society; exploited for its unfortunate location at the southeast corner of Gastown.

In the background, City Hall shines bright white on the left side of the skyline, while Library Square emits red beams of light on the right.

Little Sky House sits mid-ground, off the centre line adjacent to Yaletown's towers of lit windows.

The sky is a moving backdrop.

I watch for signs.

Gastown, Vancouver

Out of five Glaucous-winged Gull nests, I have watched and recorded since mating season began this spring, only two have thrived. The downtown nests are on the Brandeis Hotel, Pantages Theatre, Carnegie Centre, and the Royal Bank at Main and Hastings, high above the hoi polloi of Homo sapiens . One nest failed to hatch, two nests with one chick each failed to manage successful flight and were lost, leaving the two nests of pairs with one successful flyer left in each; two birds out of seven, so far (the Carnegie nest hatched two chicks but days later, when they were taken out for the long walk, only one came back). I have practiced watching without sentiment while observing and documenting the inexplicable course of nature. Life is hard but genetic survival appears to be a biological and logical imperative, of the highest order, for all living things.

This little creature was photographed at Lost Lagoon and appears to be on track to maturity.
